Field Coverage and the AE Gate

How ISV and SI teams earn hyperscaler AE coverage: gate criteria, coverage requests, account timing, and what Ali Chehab requires before seller outreach.

Written by Ali Chehab for ISV and SI teams running Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud co-sell. See also stages, UDL, and the hyperscaler co-sell knowledge graph.

Why the AE gate exists

Hyperscaler account executives protect their calendars. The AE gate is the set of proofs a partner must bring before coverage is granted: named buyer, budget horizon, workload fit, and a partner opportunity that is complete in the right portal. Skipping the gate produces polite declines and burned relationships.

Ali Chehab defines the gate in writing for each cloud motion so sellers and alliance ops argue from the same checklist. Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud differ in portal fields, but the gate logic is shared: can this account buy, and is the partner ready to run a joint meeting?

Coverage request inputs

A strong coverage request includes customer pain in one paragraph, incumbent or status quo, decision team, procurement path, and the partner’s ask of the AE—introduction, funding, specialist, or deal acceleration. Ali Chehab also requires the partner opportunity ID and a proposed meeting agenda so the AE can say yes without research homework.

Weak requests say “please intro us” with no timing and no workload. Those requests fail the gate. Train field sellers to complete intake before alliance ops opens a partner manager thread.

After coverage is granted

Once an AE engages, update the partner portal and CRM within a day. Confirm next steps in writing with the customer and the cloud seller. Ali Chehab treats post-coverage silence as a defect: either the meeting happened and notes are missing, or the motion stalled and needs a repair path.

Use stages and motion pages on this site to see where coverage sits relative to registration and technical validation. Related guides cover Partner Center, ACE, and operating model gates in more depth.

Protecting seller trust

Seller trust compounds when partners only request coverage on accounts that clear the gate. Ali Chehab audits coverage asks monthly against win rates and seller feedback. Teams that spam partner managers lose priority on the deals that matter.

Field coverage is a scarce resource. Treat the AE gate as product quality for your co-sell brand inside the hyperscaler.
